Clinical Pilates / Pilates

Pilates has been refined and further developed from the early work of Joseph Pilates (from the 1920) by both dancers and physiotherapists.

Physiotherapists often refer to their style of Pilates at ‘Clinical Pilates’ because it often relates to the rehabilitation of an injury or focus’ on preventing injury through strengthening ‘core’ musculature. The more traditional style of Pilates is often taught by instructors (not necessarily physiotherapists) who are extensively trained and focuses on strengthening and perfecting movement mechanics.

The two styles are almost identical, the main difference being the instructors background (be they physiotherapist or not).

At Nepean Physiotherapy Clinic there are Pilates instructors available who are trained in the traditional style of Pilates or in Clinical Pilates. Essentially, Pilates involves low impact exercises specific to an individual’s needs, with the use of spring loaded equipment (Reformer and Trapeze Table), the Swissball and floor/Matwork. Exercises focus on controlling movement utilizing muscle endurance rather than pure strength, to improve performance and posture.
